Genesis Croix de Fer 853 frameset black Reynolds 853 steel including steel fork
The Croix de Fer from Genesis can rightfully be considered one of the blueprints for the gravel bike genre. Introduced to the public in 2009, it was one of the first frames to combine drop bars, disc brakes, and wider tires. In 2010, Vin Cox set a world record on the Croix de Fer, covering 18,000 miles around the world in 163 days.
Today, there are countless gravel bikes that take their geometry and components from the Croix de Fer, but the original still holds its own. Having evolved in small ways over the years, it is now available in numerous versions as complete bikes and framesets, from the simple aluminum model to the top-of-the-line titanium model.
The frame offered here is made from Reynolds 853 frame tubing, an air-hardened steel that doesn't lose any of its positive properties even during the welding process. In terms of weight, durability, stiffness, and comfort, it's certainly one of the best tubing available outside of stainless steel and titanium.
As for the size recommendation from our English colleagues at Genesis, we're on the somewhat sportier side. In most cases, we can all ride two frame sizes, and the intended use and geometry often provide insight into the right choice. At 1.83m, I ride a Croix de Fer in size M, without any spacers under the stem. The bike still offers me a riding position suitable for long distances. For me, the reason for this is the frame's truly relaxed geometry, which allows me to choose the smaller of the two frame sizes.
The color isn't a simple black, but rather anthracite with black. The decals shimmer depending on the light, but in a subtle way. It looks stylish and fits the bike perfectly.
We currently have all frame sizes available in limited quantities. Since the frame is currently barely available in Europe, we are now offering it online for a limited time. Of course, you can pick up all frames in-store at the Mütze, but we also ship them.
The frame comes with thru axles, the stem and seat post shown in the pictures are not included in the delivery and are only a serving suggestion.
